How to buy the right bag

Julie Potvin, Assistant Designer and Product Developer for the leather-goods label M0851, gives advice on how to buy the right bag in Loulou magazine.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Before setting out to buy a trendy tote, flip through a few magazines to see which styles stand out this season. You'll be glad you did when you hit the shops and see just how many bags there are.

BE PRACTICAL. Before grabbing the first thing that looks like it came out of a fashion shoot, consider what you need your bag for. Look for trendy shapes and colours, but don't sacrifice practicality.

CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS. Look for a bag that can be carried several ways: on one shoulder, across the chest, on your forarm or in your hand. Multiple options mean more bag for your buck.

CHOOSE COLOUR CAREFULLY. Pick the hue that suites you best. Take a few moments to scan your wardrobe, to see what shade will best complement your clothe. There's no point in investing in a trendy colour if it won't work with your attire.

TREND LIGHTLY. Don't fall too hard for the latest styles. The beauty of a good bag is that it will last a long time, so look for something fairly classic that has a trendy twist or cool accent.

SLEEP ON IT. Before you commit to a purchase, be sure that you'll still be in love with it tomorrow. The bag that you dream about all night long is usually the right choice.

I wholeheartedly agree with her on being practical and not falling for trends all the times and going for the classic. That just ensures you have bags that you can carry for more than one season, and puts emphasis on your own personal style.
