How to build a makeup kit on a budget
BEGIN WITH THE BASICS. All you need to enhance your looks: a concealer (to cover that you'd rather remain hidden), a neutral blush (for an instant healthy glow), mascara (to make your peepers pop) and a lipstick or gloss. And don't bother shelling out for a cute little makeup bag - use a clear, zippered plastic bag instead. As a bonus, those little baggies are great for travel.
MULTI-TASK. Use your lipstick as a cream blush and your blush as an eyeshadow. Not only will this help you save money but using a limited palette will also give you an ultra-refined, monochromatic look.
BEEF UP YOUR KIT. Little by little you can complete your kit by adding a foundation (to smooth out your skin tone), and eyebrow pencil (to help shape your brows), a neutral eyeliner (to define your eyes) and another lipstick or gloss (depending on which one you already have).
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. We all have a sixth sense for knowing what will suit as best, so go for colours that you are intuitively attracted to. Another safe bet is to stick to the shades that are similiar to ones you've worn and loved in the past. And if you find you have made a mistake, no biggie: Low-cost cosmetics are practically made for experimenting!
Some of my favorite mass market makeup are...
Rimmel Volum'Eyes 5 X Volume Comb Mascara, Black-Black $6.99
Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation $7.99
LOreal Eye Smoker $4.99
L'Oreal Colour Juice Sheer Lip Gloss, Berry Burst $7.49
And if you really want to experiment and you only have some spare change, try e.l.f.! Seriously, you can go crazy with it.
